Twenty-fifth Year of National Poetry Month, #Nationalpoetrymonth, #Earthday

Happy Earth Day!!

Even the smallest act of picking up trash, turning off the light in a room when noone is there
and/or recycling helps our world. The Earth thanks you.

Celebrate the 25th Anniversary of National Poetry Month

Hello and welcome to the Focused on Story blog!

According to the poets.org website, "Launched by the Academy of American Poets in April 1996, National Poetry Month reminds the public that poets have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters."

The month has inspired me to get back to writing poetry. At least scribbling my deep, inner thoughts on paper or maybe a journal. How about you?

Just for fun, I made up this image-A Poem from my Mom

A Spring Poem--by my mother every spring!

"Spring has sprung.
This grass is riz.
I wonder where the flowers iz."

Okay, granted it's kinda corny and fun, but I delight in remembering her with her blue eyes sparkling as she recited it.

Let me introduce you to a real poet, my friend Sue Werner.

Sue has released a series of poetry books accompanied by beautiful images. She describes her poems as "A journey in verse to discover the presence of God in our lives by seeing the ordinary as extraordinary."

She began by writing her own poems every day and then felt the call to record them in these beautiful eBooks and print book.

Celebrate Poetry month with Sue Werner's inspirational poems.

The 5 W's of Story: Mark Love's Romantic Suspense--Fleeing Beauty and Giveaway

The 5 W's Guest Author Series
Hello and welcome to the Focused on Story Blog!

One of the basics when learning to be a writer is to listen to a lecture on the Five W's.  The 5 W's in a story are:
WHO
WHAT
WHERE
WHEN
WHY
These questions are the essence of a story. Since we are focused on story at this blog, we need to realize just how important working out the 5 W's can be for creating a great story for your readers.

You'll find this series with my guests informative and entertaining and not a stuffy lecture in a dusty, old classroom with a professor palavering on and on and on.

Today I'm thrilled to introduce you to my guest author, Mark Love. Isn't that a great name for a romance author? Mark is generously offering an eBook format of his book to a lucky commenter. To enter the drawing, add a comment below by 9 p.m. ET, Sunday, July 14. Good luck. Now let's explore the 5 W's in Mark's romantic suspense, Fleeing Beauty.

Thanks, J.Q.

Here's my shot at the Five W's
Fleeing Beauty (A Jamie Richmond Mystery)
Mystery and Romance
THE FIVE W's: Fleeing Beauty (A Jamie Richmond Mystery) by Mark Love

Who:  Jamie Richmond is the star of the story. Just ask her, she’s not shy!  After working for ten years as an investigative reporter for one of the Detroit area’s daily newspapers, Jamie decided to pursue her passion and write mystery novels. A stubborn redhead who is fiercely loyal to her small circle of friends, Jamie is a magnet for trouble.  Using her skills and wits, she’s often able to unravel the mystery that draws her in.  Keeping her balanced and more than a little distracted is her blooming romantic relationship with Malone, a sergeant with the Michigan State Police.

What:  This is the third book in the series. Jamie’s father was a very successful artist who died suddenly when she was only seven-years-old.  Now, twenty-five years later, his studio is discovered, along with a hidden storeroom packed with crates of his work.  Jamie and her friends undertake the project of unpacking them to make a catalogue that can be appraised. Before they can finish, part of the collection is stolen.  Now Jamie is determined to find out who is behind the theft and recover the missing art.

In addition to the project and the mystery, there are several subplots. Romance is building with Jamie and Malone. Her mother, Vera and her ex-husband, Bert, are rekindling a few passionate connections. And there’s Ian, a teenage boy who is Malone’s unofficial kid brother, discovers Brittany, a neighborhood cutie.  Along with the artwork, Jamie also discovers several journals that her father wrote, that give her new insights into his life.

When:  It’s a contemporary story, and it takes place during the summer!

Where: Metro Detroit, or as some would say, Motown.  Jamie and her friends live in the suburbs, but a lot of the action takes place right in Detroit, down near Wayne State University, an area that isn’t far from the dark and dangerous side of the city.

Why:  Jamie likes to keep busy. Between writing novels, spending time with her friends and unraveling mysteries, it’s all part of her life. And she wouldn’t have it any other way.

EXCERPT:   Fleeing Beauty (A Jamie Richmond Mystery) by Mark Love
In this scene, Jamie and Malone are with her best friend Linda, and Ian, the teenage boy, who is helping unpack the crates in the storeroom.
This sculpture was titled “Fleeing Beauty”.
It was a woman caught in the act of running. Tendrils of slender marble in various lengths and thicknesses extended from her head, as if they were locks of hair billowing out behind her. Part of her face was obscured, turned against her shoulder as if attempting to hide her features from whoever was chasing her. The woman’s body was voluptuous, full of dangerous curves. There was something haunting about this piece. The guys became quiet, which was unusual. Linda slowly moved around it, taking pictures.
“Holy shit,” Ian muttered.
“Watch your language,” Malone said, cuffing him lightly on the back on the head.
“How did he do that?” Ian said, taking a step away. “She looks real.”
“She looks alive,” Malone said.
“Check the file,” I suggested.
None of us could take our eyes off the sculpture.
We spread the file out on the worktable. There were pictures of a woman standing in front of a drop cloth. She was blonde, with an impish smile on her face. She could have been in her early to middle twenties. It was impossible to tell how tall she was. Her figure was eye-catching, with a tiny waist and rounded hips. Most of the pictures showed her in a one-piece bathing suit. There was one where she wore a sheer negligee. There were shots of her standing on a pedestal, others with her arms outstretched, and still others where she was looking over her shoulder. In a couple of photos, he must have used a fan to blow her hair back.
“She’s a doll,” Ian said.
“Jamie, I think this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” Linda said softly.
“You’ll get no argument from me.”

Reflections on the Blogging from A To Z Challenge by J.Q. Rose, Coming Up in May

2018 #AtoZchallenge participation badge
A to Z Challenge Badge
Designed by Jeremy Hawkins (graphics) @ Hollywood Nuts
Thank you, Jeremy!
Hello and Welcome to the Focused on Story Blog. Today I'm reflecting on my participation in the A to Z Blogging Challenge during the month of April. In case you are a new visitor, let me get you up to speed about the theme and what I had planned for the blog posts. Then, I'll evaluate the experience I shared with over 600 bloggers!

MY THEME FOR THE MONTH
If you're a Word Nerd, then you'll like my theme for April because I share words that caught my attention (wraith), words that fascinate me (bedizened), words that roll off my tongue (catawampus), words that make a sound (zizz), and words I encountered during my life experience (pulchritude). Many of the words are new-to-me (xenogogy). My vocabulary expanded and perhaps yours did too.

Now, Word Nerds, let me tell you about the hills and valleys and bumps in the road as I journeyed through the month.

REFLECTIONS ON THE BLOGGING FROM A TO Z APRIL CHALLENGE
by J.Q. Rose
2018 A to Z #atozchallenge blog schedule
Calendar for A to Z Blogging Challenge
GOALS

Write 26 blog posts in one month—I did accomplish this! I’ve wanted to participate in A to Z ever since I learned about it probably five years ago. But I hesitated to join because we travel in mid-April, so getting Internet access on the road is difficult. Before we left home, I wrote and pre-scheduled my blog posts through the travel time and finished up the remaining posts when I arrived home. Please indulge me as I bask in the reality that I pulled off this challenge. Thanks.

Be entertaining and informative—In other words, don’t bore readers to death. I did warn visitors my blog theme was aimed at Word Nerds. I tried to make learning new words fun for readers and hoped they picked up interesting and probably trivial information that may win them a prize in a word game. From comments I received, the Word Nerds enjoyed the posts.

Increase traffic to my site—According to my Google Analytics information, my traffic increased 90% in April. I noticed a drop-off when we were traveling because I couldn’t promote the event. Now the challenge is to retain all those new users!

Connect with people—I was pleased with the variety of bloggers' themes and the wrters were talented and creative. I had a turnover of new visitors, so maybe I wasn’t as entertaining and informative as I thought. But my regular visitors came back often, and I appreciated them taking time to visit.

PERKS

Learned a lot of new words and new meanings through research—I broadened my vocabulary by participating in this challenge (and I hope my readers did too). I started collecting the words at least a year before the challenge started. As I wrote the blog posts, I did research on each word and found new meanings and uses and variations of the words. How many of these words will I ever use in a conversation or in my writing? I doubt very few. But hey, it was fun for this Word Nerd.

Meeting new people was a goal and I certainly did meet lots of  interesting folks on the adventure.

SURPRISES

Comments—I wish I had more visitors leave comments so I could connect with them. But I understand. Leaving a comment takes up valuable time. When someone left a comment, I would have appreciated links back to the visitor’s blog so I could return the favor. Very few left a link for me. Perhaps they felt it was too promotional? I don’t feel that way at all. In fact, one of the reasons for my joining the event was to connect with readers and increase exposure to my blog.

Confusion—Even though the admins of the event gave precise instructions, I had to actually write the blogs and post them before I was comfortable with the procedures. I never discovered if I was in the list of daily blogs or even on the master list. I started going through the main list to find my site, but I quit since I felt I was wasting time looking. I trusted the sign-up procedure.

Overwhelming amount of bloggers. Too many to visit actually. Instead of one group of authors or one group of health coaches or one group of educators, all bloggers were on the Master List. The admin explained how to filter info in the Google Doc, but I never felt like I had time to figure it out.

Time needed. I knew I would spend lots of time writing and researching each post, but I was amazed at how much more time I spent on promotion and logistics. The number of words and hours I spent on this project would have probably netted at least four chapters in my WIP. But I don’t feel it was time wasted. I really enjoyed writing and researching words and expanding my world by meeting new folks I woul,d've never met if I hadn’t jumped into this wacky challenge.

THANK YOU

Thank you to the administrators and founders of the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge. Thank you to the vast number of bloggers who I joined for the journey. And thank you to those who visited the Focused on Story Blog. Come back so we can keep the momentum going!

Blogging from A to Z Challenge: In the Meantime

Hello and welcome to the Focused on Story Blog. I wonder how often I should state what I'm doing here. If someone popped in on this blog, not knowing I am doing a month-long challenge of writing a blog every day using the alphabet letters as prompts, they'd probably wonder. Say what?

~interregnum~
A period when normal government is suspended,
esp. between successive reigns or regimes
an interval or pause, Kindle dictionary

When I came across this word, I thought it sounded like a part of the body. I learned I was wrong. Not even close.

Do you often read the entire sentence to figure out the meaning of the word without having to drag out the dictionary? Me too. But with kindle, I just hold my thumb on the word, and the definition pops up. No guessing.

You may be interested to know “ Kindle Fire comes with The New Oxford American Dictionary. You can also download free dictionaries for French, Spanish, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, and Chinese (Simplified)." Amazon.com

But I digress. With a bit of tongue-in-cheek humor, Pat Conroy wrote about his short time as a substitute school principal in his memoir, The Waters are Wide. He introduced a letter he was given during his “interregnum as principal.” I assume he was thinking he was in-between regimes or government used in this way. After all, he was a lowly first-year teacher and had to follow the strict rules placed upon him by the principal and the other teacher in the school.
Taking a trip in April
I've thought about taking a pause with this challenge since I'll be traveling in April. The interregnum between leaving and arriving will be difficult for me to connect online. I can schedule posts, but I won't have internet service for several days, and I hate trying to use my phone to answer emails and post comments. So if you discover I am not replying to comments, just know I'm probably on the road.

I'm very proud of myself for using this new word in a sentence. I love your comments when you tell me you want to use the daily word in a conversation. Go for it!

If you're a blogger do you schedule posts to be published on future dates?

If you're on Facebook, do you schedule posts for future dates?

If you have time, please like my author page on Facebook and I'll like yours. I love getting to know readers. Click here for my FB page. Thank you.

Blogging from A to Z Challenge: Dark vs Light

Hello and welcome to the Focused on Story Blog. If you are a Word Nerd, then you'll like my theme for April because I'm going to share words that have caught my attention, words that fascinate me, words that roll off my tongue, words that make a sound (crackle), and words that have been in my vocabulary for one reason or another. Yes, I'll explain why they made the list. Many of the words are new-to-me. Hopefully, by including them in this survey of words, my vocabulary will expand and perhaps you’ll also learn more words.

~gorgon~
a fierce, frightening, or repulsive woman, Dictionary.com

Just to give you an idea how fierce and repulsive this woman is, the second definition of gorgon is “in classical mythology, each of three sisters, Stheno, Euryale, and Medusa, with snakes for hair, who had the power to turn anyone who looked at them to stone.”  Now you'd think author Helena Fairfax is describing a scary scene with a mad woman chasing someone, but that isn’t the case. She uses this horrible dark description of a woman in a lighthearted way. She actually was describing the male head chef in the hotel’s kitchen in Felicia at the Cross Hotel, guarding his kitchen from employees who try to sneak in for snacks during the day. I love the contrast of the description of such a horrid person being a chef instead of a warrior or scary dragon.

Terror on Sunshine Boulevard
Available at major online booksellers
One of my favorite tricks as a writer is to juxtapose the dark side with the light side of a story. In the title of my latest mystery, Terror on Sunshine Boulevard, terror certainly contrasts with the idea of sunshine. The story takes place in sunny Florida in an active retirement community full of fun winter activities. But death, murder, mystery are played out against the background of the fun-loving retired seniors.

Can you think of more stories or movies with such contrasts?

Blogging from A to Z Challenge: Short and Simple

Hello and welcome to the Focused on Story Blog by J.Q. Rose. Are you a word lover? You're here at the right place. All this month I'll be revealing words that fascinate me. Read on.

~frisson~
sudden strong feeling of excitement or fear; a thrill, Kindle dictionary

Frisson is another word from Matthew Peters story, Killing John the Baptist. This word sums up that sudden feeling of excitement in one word, no more description needed. Matt used it in a simple sentence to describe his character, Branson, and his feeling of danger. “The frisson ran through Branson.” When I read that line, I felt that fear immediately in my own body.

Sometimes the short, simple sentence can say so much more than a long, complex one. Do you agree?
