Spotlight on Karina Fabian's Mind Over Psyche and Giveaway

Welcome fantasy author, Karina Fabian, who is on her book tour for her latest book, Mind Over Psyche, Book Two in the Mind Over Trilogy. For your chance to win a free electronic copy of Mind Over Psyche, leave a comment or question for Karina.

Can Deryl and his friend unlock the secrets of Deryl’s role on Kanaan
before the Kanaan decide he is too dangerous to let live?
I admire Karina's creative, imaginative writing. Today she shares her thoughts on the joy of having written stories. Do you identify with her feelings?

The Joy of Having Written
By Karina Fabian

Every now and then, we have Tabata week at the gym I attend.  If you don’t know Tabata, think of it as being in labor:  20 seconds of hard pushing and pain, followed by ten seconds of rest.  Of course, drugs are discouraged and your trainer might not appreciate it if you snarl, “This is your fault!” but it only lasts an hour, and then you’re done until the next day.  Sometimes, I enjoy going to the gym, but it had been a crazy week, anyway, and my motivation was low, even less so for Tabata, but I went.

Why?  Even though I didn’t look forward to going, I enjoyed having gone.
That’s how it goes with writing sometimes.  There are plenty of times when I don’t feel like writing.  Sometimes, other things in life seem much more important, whether planning a surprise for my husband’s retirement or doing dishes.  Sometimes, it’s looking at my Amazon sales and realizing that, should something horrible happen to Rob, I would not be able to support my family on my writing.  Rarely, but on occasion, a bad review or comment from someone will make me wonder why I bother.

But why I bother in those moments is the same reason I bother to go to the gym:  Even if I don’t want to write, I invariably enjoy having written.

There’s a definite satisfaction in a scene well crafted, a character who comes alive on the keyboard, or a sentence that makes your eyes sting with its poignancy.  (Just wrote one of those today, in fact.)   There’s getting that message out of the blue from a reader saying they loved my book, or from an editor asking when the next story is coming.  There’s that hope that this story, this novel, will be the one to break through—but of course, that will never happen if I don’t write it.  I know, too, that I’m in this for the long term.  I love writing.  I love having written, and I love going back over my own stories and marveling anew at the adventures I lived without ever leaving my chair.

Karina shows off the results of her gym workouts.
After eight months at the gym, including four or five weeks of Tabata, I’ve lost 25 pounds.  That puts me at just under 145.  One of the ladies asked me what my ultimate goal was.  I suppose I could go for 120 or 125, which is what my weight from my teens to my early thirties, but I realize that it doesn’t matter as much to me, any longer.  Maybe I’ll get there, but if I can stay around 140 and keep going with my exercising, then I’m satisfied.

You know, I have to keep that same attitude with my writing.  Someday, I may make the NYT best-seller list.  I may find my Amazon sales grow enough to let my husband quit his day job.  But if that never happens, then if I can keep writing and producing and find readers who love my work, then I’m satisfied.  Even when my motivation is low, and things around me discourage me from my craft, I keep pounding away at those words, the same way I pound away at the weights (minus the labor-like groaning, of course.)

After all, the real satisfaction is in having written.

Excerpt from Mind Over Psyche

Joshua returned to consciousness fully expecting to be in a hospital bed, his slashed throat swathed in bandages, his singing career over before it had started. His hands moved to his throat, found it bare and intact and breathed a prayer of thanks before opening his eyes.
He found himself on his back in a small, tree-lined meadow, but he didn’t recognize the trees.
He sat up slowly, more disoriented than dizzy. Had he had amnesia? “Sachiko?” he called. “Mom? Dad? Anyone?”
He saw Deryl lying on his side, unconscious. Not far from him, near a break in the treeline, stood—
Joshua gulped.
A unicorn!
…or something like a unicorn. Its rhinoceros-like horn and thick neck and shoulders made it a far scarier version than any Joshua had read about in fantasy novels. It stared straight at them.
Joshua licked dry lips. “Easy fella,” he soothed, and reached over to shake his friend. “Deryl, time to wake up.”
Part of Joshua’s mind gibbered that Deryl was really psychic, that he’d teleported them to an alien planet. Another part argued that he was dreaming or had gone insane himself. He told them both to shut up, but he couldn’t stop his breathing from accelerating or his hands from trembling as he shook his friend.
Deryl’s eyelids fluttered, then closed.
He’s drugged. Malachai’s zombiefied him again, and we’re stuck on another world!
He shook his friend harder. “Come on, man! Don’t do this to me. Wake up!”
Joshua heard hoof beats and turned in time to see several unicorns with red-clad riders approach from the trail. He vaguely noted they looked human, before his eyes focused on the swords they drew.
He did the only thing he could think of. He raised his arms, palms open, and said, “We come in peace!”
The warrior he faced, a scowling man with a narrow head, wide-set eyes, and a pocked and scarred face, didn’t understand him or didn’t care. He arched his sword toward Joshua.
Joshua covered his head with his arms and ducked.

Hobby Hoedown Features Fantasy Author Karina Fabian's Circuit Training

Please welcome, fantasy author Karina Fabian to Hobby Hoedown...again. Well, actually, she sent her character, Vern, the dragon previously. He IS quite a dragon, a PI, in fact. Check out Vern's hobby if you get a minute. It's a most unusual one to be sure.
Karina has taken up Circuit Training to get herself fit. I think you'll get a kick out of it or perhaps exhausted from just reading about this hobby.

Circuit Torture…er Training
By Karina Fabian
Here’s a simple fact about me:  I am a sedentary creature.  Inertia and I are best buds, and as a writer, I’ve got more push to keep my fingers moving and my butt stationary in the chair.  I’ve kept meaning to get in shape, and I even took haidong gumbdo lessons (Korean sword martial arts), but a couple of hours swinging the sword each week just didn’t do the trick.  Even worse, I am an indifferent cook who does not much care to give up her sweets or go on a diet of any kind, no matter how popular. So it’s no surprise that at 45, I weighed 169 pounds and had the muscular consistency of a bag of pudding.
That’s why, in January 2013, I took up a new hobby—circuit torture.  The premise is easy:  you put your body through unnatural movements bearing as much weight as you can for as many repetitions as you can until you make noises similar to those of childbirth…but only for a limited time, after which you move on to some other new and unusual punishment.  In order to make your Experience of Pain complete, you alternate exercises with aerobics activity.  Since running gives me shin splints, my cardio pain device is the Jacob’s Ladder.  Imagine, if you will, a treadmill made of  rungs and set at a 45 degree angle.  The faster you climb, the faster the rungs move out from under you.  Kind of an analogy to my life, come to think of it.  It doesn’t kill my shins—after all, circuit torture is supposed to hurt, not damage—but my muscles feel every session!
The owner of this demonic health club is Ryion Butcher, who recently won not one but three awards at his first bodybuilding event.  He’s got the perfect personality for a personal torturer:  upbeat, competent, and always glad to push you further.  He’s even got the perfect laugh: encouraging, without belittling.  You can barely hear the Bwa-hahaha undertones.  I think there must be a school for it.  (Seriously, though, he’s a terrific guy, willing to work with you to modify the workout if needed, and he doesn’t push me nearly as hard as I push myself.)
Why would I choose such a diabolical establishment?  Inertia.  I’m a lazy person.  If I’m sitting, I’ll stay sitting, so if I want to work out, I need to do it when I’m already up and about.  The gym is in my neighborhood, on the way home from dropping the kids at school.  I drive by it every morning, so why not just stop in and get the torture done?  I’ve gone 5 days a week every week since I joined.
I still don’t eat the best, though I’ve cut down on sweets and sodas, but as of the 3-month point, I’d lost 14 pounds and 23 inches.  Plus, I’ve got muscles again.  I won’t be participating in any competitions, but I don’t completely wobble like a Jell-O mold anymore.
Plus, it’s fodder for stories.  Someday, I’ll have a villainous personal trainer with a gym of EVIL.  The Jacob’s Ladder will be suspended over the piranha tank.  Of course, you can stop any time you like…
Looking Good!  Bwahahaha!

Oh, wait a minute, Readers.  Her main character, Vern the Dragon, is whispering in my ear...Hope he's not a fiery dragon while I'm listening.

Welcome, Vern!

Dragon Hobby—Collecting, What Else?

By Vern

Considering I’m a dragon, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that I’m a collector.  Yeah, treasure’s great, though perhaps not for the reasons you think.  We’re really not so interested in collecting a big pile of gold for its value as much as its color, its coolness, the way it rubs in our scales…oh, now I’m homesick for my pile!  To a dragon, there’s nothing as cozy.  (Although I am fond of my pile of mattresses and pillows that makes my nest here in the Mundane, except when the roof leaked and they got damp.  Dragons do not like damp.)
As far as collecting for collecting’s sake, I personally was into rare artifacts with interesting stories.  I had a love letter from Baldur to Hella.  Yep, he actually missed the Emo Maid of Norse Mythology.  She has it now, though.  I traded it for her father, Loki, who was doing his latest pennance in Helheim among the blind-deaf-mutes.  Oh, and her brother’s intestines to tie Loki up in.  It’s a Norse thing.  You can read about it in Live and Let Fly—after you finish this article.
My territory spanned the Mediterranean, so I have a lot of trinkets from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.  I have a statue of Anubis that I liked to mention to him now and again.  It’s a terrible likeness, yet caught his inner person, I thought.  He disagrees rather vehemently.  I have a Sumarian fertility symbol, not that an androgynous creature like me has need for it.  I have a little replica of the Ark of the Covenant; yep, they had souvenir drek in Solomon’s time.  I got a wizard to bespell it so it looks bigger than it really is; I loved watching people’s reactions.
Ever wonder why dragons favor caves?  Climate control.  I’ve got a lot of wonderful pieces back in my cave at Caraparavalenciana that would have otherwise succumbed to time, weather, and the handling of humanoid hands.  See?  Dragon collecting has purpose.
Of course, all that is temporarily on hold for now.  Vows of poverty working for the Church and all that.  Doesn’t stop me from collecting, however.  Now, my collections are more intellectual:  information, memories, unique experiences.  And if I can’t have the souvenir, at least I’ll have something to ruminate on when my stint serving God through the Church is done.

Thanks, Vern. Be sure to check out Vern’s other tales at Dragon Eye P I

Guest Author Karina Fabian Live and Let Die

When a dragon and a nun play secret agent, all Hel breaks loose!
It is my pleasure to welcome the zany, creative author Karina Fabian to the blog today. Karina is an award-winning fantasy, science fiction and horror author, whose  books make people laugh, cry or think—sometimes all three.  Check out her latest at her website, Fabianspace

Her newest book in the Dragon Eye P.I. series, Live and Let Fly, was released on April 20 from Muse It Up Publishing. I'm excited she is stopping here on her blog tour so you can get to know her and get a taste of her entertaining writing. After Karina's piece on Writing and the Twisted Mind, enjoy an excerpt from Live and Let Fly, watch the book trailer, and check out the links for more info about Karina and where to find her book. A special treat from this author is a clever video of slides with Karina reading from her story.

Writing and the Twisted Mind
by
Karina Fabian

When I was a Sophomore in high school, I played the creative writer in Up the Down Staircase.  I can’t even remember her name, but I remember the lines she read to the class about the thing she saw skulking across her kitchen.  “How fearful were his eyes!  Should I kill him?... Is it obvious I’m talking about a cockroach?”

To get into the part, I kept a notebook with me, where I wrote flash fiction with bizarre twists.  The one I remember most was the frog in the blender—from the frog’s POV.  Who knew that part was going to prepare me for my career as a fantasy/sci-fi and parody writer?

Live and Let Fly is full of crazy scenes, but I think my favorite when it comes to the twisted mind category is attack of the Munchy, Munchy Moles.   Alas, I must withhold the scene at the request of my children who think it’s the funniest scene in the book, but…

Have you ever played Hungry, Hungry, Hippos?  Well imagine how the ball must feel:  Towering jaws of death opening and closing, opening and closing, as you scramble and bang against your fellow balls, trying frantically to keep your distance.  If you should accidentally roll into those gaping mouths, you enter oblivion—but if you don’t quite make it, you’ll be smashed upon its plastic teeth.

Now…
* Make the board life-sized
* Make the board tilt
*  Instead of being the ball, you have to avoid the balls—six-foot-in-diameter heavy balls of rolling destruction!

Then, just for fun, I had the animatronics section of the museum come to life and attack as well.
It was one of the most fun scenes to write: scrambling people, rolling balls, vicious animated machines in the shapes of all kinds of nasty creatures.  Bullets flying, people yelling…and one dragon doing his best to save them all.

It doesn’t end well—though not fatally—of course, which means I had plenty of opportunity to get my characters in and out of new fixes.

Unlike the character I played in Up the Down Staircase, I do not take my fiction too seriously, which just makes it all the more fun!

Karina certainly does have fun with fiction. Take a peek at the book trailer.

Excerpt:
Charlie started to close the door behind us, his other hand gripping the handle of his dagger so tightly I could hear the leather wrap on the handle strain, as we listened to the footsteps coming our way, slow, bored. My predator's instincts rose; then I had a great idea. I shook my head at Charlie and winked, and he shuffled out of my way, leaving the door ajar. I settled myself with my back to the door, just inside the shadows and let the script play itself out:

CLUELESS MINION enters Stage Left. He pauses, hearing a noise, but does not report it. Instead, he fondles the stars on his nametag and moves toward the empty hallway, his mind on adding another. (Probably saying, "I was proactive today!")
CLUELESS pauses at door, hesitating. He stands and, back to the door, reaches for his walkie-talkie.
Suddenly, a well-muscled and gorgeously scaled tail whips out from the crack in the door and wraps itself around his neck. He only has time to grab ineffectively at the tail before he's drawn into the darkness. The door shuts behind him.
Pan shot of the empty hallway.
FADE TO BLACK

I slammed my victim on the floor and pinned him with my forelegs, then I leaned my face in nice and slow, making sure he got a good look at my fangs before he saw my eyes. "Where's the girl?" I growled low and menacingly.
"Wh-What g-g-girl?"
Charlie crouched down by Stutterboy and glanced at his nametag. "Look, Philip, we're in a bit of a hurry. We know Rhoda Dakota's being held captive somewhere nearby. Now you can be a good survivor and tell us where…or you can be dinner."
"I-I don't—"
"Phil A. Minion." I mused and drooled a bit for effect. I live for these moments, I really do. I licked his cheek and asked Charlie, "Can I have fries with that?"
"Why not? This is Idaho."
